The further we delve into the workings of our “mystery machine” the more we find wrong.
After filling the Turbo’s intercooler system with the proper coolant mixture, we discovered the leak in the intercoolor itself, as it spurted out all over the place Which was slightly annoying.
The second sensor that needs replacing now, is the idle control sensor, which we’ve fortunately sourced through the Lagacy forum along with a replacement indicator and intercooler.
Touch wood & fingers crossed, once we’ve replaced these parts and the exhaust, it should be ready for the MOT.
After the last session we had putting the front end straight, it seemed as if everything was going very well, until we noticed the “Engine check light” had decided to light up
Well after another bribing session of ginger snap biscuits and tea, Simon very kindly plugged in his box of tricks to analyse the fault.
It’s all down to the car sitting for over a year, and things electrical don’t like that very much apparently.
The prognossis is an iffy knock sensor and possibly a dirty sensor somewhere else, oh and the exhaust is blowing.
So some more work to keep us busy then, well it is all for charity, hopefully we’ll raise more than the current amount…………..hint hint
We put in a good stint after work last night finishing around 1am and pretty chuffed we are too.
Got the front end straightened out with a bit of rope and the pair of us pulling it out. A tidy up with various dollies and hammers and it all looks pretty good.
Certainly quite a difference to how it looked the other week.
Gave the car a little run around the farm and it starts and stops fine so time to give it a good fluids service and check it all over.
As we both said on the way up to Milton Keynes to pick up the parts we need we seem to be forever travelling up and down the country to get bits for our project so hardly a suprise then that on Saturday it was another parts bin road trip!
Meet this guy Andy through the UK Legacy forums and what a fine bloke he was. Friendly, enthusiastic and genuinely very helpful. So we did a deal on a replacement bonnet and were chatting away only to find he had another couple of Legacys around the corner in various strip down states plus a parts bin to rival a dealership. Turns out the guy has a rally team so much of the standard equipment gets upgraded so we walk away with 4 replacement brake discs for free and something rather special….. We’ll show that later but main thing is now to get it MOT’d and we don’t think we’re that far away from it.
In the meantime enjoy this from Colin McRae in his Subaru Legacy.
Today was a leap of faith with the car, we had already enlisted the help of a Subaru specialist to get the diagnostic machine linked up to find out what was up and stopping the car from firing into life.
Fortunately the it seems only the cam sensor was not working. After about 10 minutes of prodding and generally looking for (what I don’t know) the local vermin (big bad ass Rats) had been having a good old munch on the wires.
Great! Anyway what looked like a simple wire repair turned into a full scale battle with the car temporarily winning. These engines are not easy to work on with access very restrictive.
With the replacement cam sensor in place we attempted to fire it up. Now we’d flooded it with fuel and Easy Start last time so we weren’t expecting much first off. However it only bloody well fired up first time and ran as sweet as a nut straight off!!!
Nearly killed Kieron with the fumes though.
Also straightened out the bonnet and offered up the replacement bumper, lights and grille. We were losing the light but it looks good!
